Flight of Spice: Elegance in Simplicity

ELEGANCE IS NOT ABOUT BEING NOTICED. IT IS ABOUT BEING REMEMBERED.

If you look at the reviews of any red carpet event you will hear about the scandalous and the no-no´s first. The list of the best dressed is usually composed by understated gowns that fit the body type that wears them. That, to me is elegance. It is knowing what fits you best, wearing it at the right time and place and doing so with a touch of personal style. Elegance is not about colour or shape. It is merely another form of emotional intelligence.

I think there is a common misconception where ELEGANT is mistaken with CLASSIC. It is true that the classic is generally elegant, the elegant does not necessarily needs to be classic. In fact, the classic is elegant precisely because it is understated and event-conscious. Have I confused you yet? It is really quite simple. If you are going for elegance on your next event then:

Make it natural and part of your lifestyle.

From your choice of make up, the shape of your eyebrows,to the outfit you wear, do not force it, make sure it blends in with your style.

2. The when & where is everything.

If you are going to a pool party, don´t wear a gown. That is not elegant – that it tacky. Elegance is knowing what to wear and where to wear it. It is about interpersonal relationships and empathy: Elegance is knowing what to say, knowing your intention and saying it at the right time. Apply this to your closet and you will be queen.

3. Keep it understated and simple.

One thing yoga taught us is this: WE ARE ENOUGH. We don´t need an excess of anything to have value as people. Understating our look will intrigue the intelligent. Again, it makes it more about the people than the clothes. Note that simple still pays attention to detail. Simple means IMPECABLE. Any little undone seam, stain or crease will notice. To do simple correctly, care for the little things – obsessively. They speak of who you are.

4. Atitude.

And here is the holy grail. Elegance is about eloquence and poise. Be confident. Have good posture and god conversation. That, darlings, is everything. (and there will be a post on that later) And remember: Being ELEGANT is NOT BORING. Truth is it is exactly the opposite – but it is not the easy way out and it takes confidence and a true effort to pull it off (that is why so few can do it). So keep it simple and let your personality shine.
