  1. Chino

ROJO FIESTA y patrones brillantes y atrevidos.

Spring and Summer fashion is fascinating. Most designers aim to make their collections aim to make you feel the hot weather and the breeze of the ocean. Thin breathable materials, tunics that flow, sheer shirts, cut-out lace. We will see all of this this season.  And a lot of them are perfect for the coast – in fact a lot of them are sea inspired, specially the collections that arrive in hot-weather countries like Costa Rica. And I LOVE that, but one always needs that ONE piece that translates well from the ocean to the city, because let´s face it, we are a generation of wanderers and we don´t know where we will be tomorrow.

Ladies, white jumpsuits are that key piece. Roll up the hem and walk barefoot by the beach. Add heels, large earrings and you an look glam for the night. Or just wear it as simple as possible with a nice pair of shades for a hot spring day. You can style it to make it your own. This is a basic and a must in everyone´s closet this season. Many brands offer a different version. I liked this Adolfo Dominguez one. The belt and suspenders add a unique touch.

Urban Tribe: An outfit for the creative entrepreneur

The new trend is Tribal. We have all seen it and loved it.  The fringes and details are brilliant for festivals and bold looks when worn head to toe but how do we translate it to an a more urban / office look? I have to say, this trend is God-sent. A trace of it can really add sophistication and vibrance to any look and I LOVE that.  As a creative entrepreneur I always struggle between looking professional and just showing off my creative side.  In ALVA DE LA SELVA DESIGN LAB we work with companies that are not always creative and expect a pragmatic, well structured approach. My brother (partner) and I compliment each other very well. My business background gives design a strong focus on the client´s bottomline – and I want to communicate that with what I wear without loosing that creative touch. So I go for color and accents on what would otherwise be a quite traditional outfit. A bit of unexpected skin in the right places (ejem, not clevage) can also say a lot. Here we have a look that if you had it in a more sober color (say gray, black, ivory), it would be sophisticated and quite conservative. Add the color and a tribal touch and voila! Welcome to the urban tribe of creative entrepreneurs.

Tribu Urbana.

Brands Like Max Mara (my favourite of the lot), Mango, Adolfo Dominguez and Corte Fiel were summed up to give Costa Rica the height of spring-summer fashion. I had the chance to talk to the stylist and the models. The excitement was palpable and the show was coldly calculated to the smallest detail. Outfits were arranged in order of appearance (weeks before the show). They were numbered, accessorised and assigned to certain models. The show instead of being divided by brands, as most runways usually are, were divided by trends. This in itself was refreshing and inspiring. The trends we will see during this catwalk are 4:

  1. Nautical

An array of soft, lightweight materials and stripped patterns compose these looks. A clean white and marine blue are the main colors. It is a fresh, simple and casual trend made for the carefree days of endless summer.

  1. Boat Cruise

This trend is the sophisticated version of the nautical experience. Monochromatic whites in more decadent materials and metallic accents compose these looks. An elegant air of movies like casablanca spring to mind. You will need a peppered gin and tonic in one hand to wear these looks.

  1. Urban Soft

The star color of this trend is ROSE QUARTZ, one of the pantone selections for 2016. In this trend we find geometric cuts and more minimalistic shapes. I also found a hint of the romantic trend imposed by brands like Chloé and Zimmerman in international catwalks.  Contrasts between femenine and masculine details. Still fresh and with a more trendy edge, this is the summer look for the city.

  1. Chinese

FIESTA RED and patterns were the stars of this collection. Bright bold graphics. Linear cuts. Big accent pieces. Metallics and blacks. This trend is for the brave and daring and it is one to turn heads. It was great to see how brands like Max Mara and Adolfo Dominguez have incorporated vibrant patterns into their collection. Impecable cuts were present in every piece, and this is so important when it comes to prints. A bold print and a bad cut can make us look frumpy and fat. These brands pull it of seamlessly.   So that is my little preview on the up and coming trends.  Can´t wait to see the catwalk. The event will be one to remember.
